DAY 14 - A surreal moment

A magnificent moment of utter beauty as the heavens open up and the rain sails down into the blackness of a Pretoria night. A street lamp catches a glimpse of the splendor as rain navigates its way through the dead of night towards the ground. A percussion of water over leaves, puddles and tin roofs fills the world with a drone so beautiful that it keeps my eyes open and sends streams of thoughts through my mind.

A single drop of water so pure and gentle as it gives life but so powerful and ferocious as it joins the force of other droplets to cause a chaos that destroys homes as it rips its way through townships in flash floods.

We try so hard to control so much of what happens around us but some things are not in our power. The harder you try to fight it, the harder you are going to fall.

It is in grace that some of the most beautiful moments in our lives happen when we let go and let God.

* * *

I had a great conversation with Barend yesterday and experienced that phantasmagorical sensation as we spoke to each other from two totally different worlds but with the same passion for life.

The Eleven are safely in Mozambique after challenging the savage climbs around Swaziland. Anyone who has taken those roads will tell you that those aren't hills- they are walls. Some pushed, some rode, all felt the burn and all conquered.

They took some time out in Maputo to source some old maps that would serve as ancient/modern versions of a GPS to navigate their way North. The plan seems to be to take bike to beach and ride as close to sea-level as possible while paying close attention to tides and the lesser-spotted-killer-beach-sharks (they're really rare. You don't see them until it's almost too late).

Barend tells me they have been really blessed with the journey so far and have eaten and rested very well. God has been protecting and guiding them very intimately and we pray that He takes them to the ends of the earth and back.

Have a truly spectacular weekend and be blessed.

  1. heya.. its going real well.. the RUM works well as a remedy against mosquitos.. the rusty bicycles are cleaned and repaired.. we spent xmas in TOFO with locals and came across other young people with similar dreams and passions, embarking ons similar journeys.. with Gerhard going home we are only 10 left... each bought a gift of 100 mets and we played the xmas game.. each got a gift they actually wanted.. i won a mozam bracelet.. condensed milk, chips, chocolates, cookies and pipes were also among the gifts..Mary Xmas back in SA for all.. freedom is calling us to the wilderness, but apparently not only us, but other young people as well.. a man can do what a man will endure.. and if u endure.. the reward and the memories is most definitely worth it
